What Are Pool Accent Tiles — and Why Do They Matter?

Pool accent tiles are the decorative tiles used selectively within a pool design — not as a continuous surface but as deliberate points of visual emphasis. Where waterline tile defines the pool's border, accent tile defines its character.

In practice, accent tile appears on pool step risers, as insert bands within a waterline, as floor medallions, on spa walls, or as decorative panels on water features. Each placement is a choice — a decision about where the eye should land, what story the pool tells, and how far the craftsmanship extends.

The most memorable pools — the ones that photograph beautifully, that guests remember, that hold their value — are pools where someone made deliberate choices about accent tile. It is the least expensive decision with the highest visual return in pool design.

I
Pool step risers
The vertical face of each pool step — the most photographed detail in any pool. Hand-painted patterns here are visible from the deck and underwater.
II
Waterline insert band
A decorative strip of patterned accent tile set within or adjacent to the main waterline border, adding complexity and visual rhythm.
III
Pool floor medallion
A geometric or figurative tile composition set into the pool floor — visible from above and magnified beautifully by water depth.
IV
Spa & water feature walls
Full interior walls of a spa or the face of a water feature — where accent tile becomes the dominant surface rather than a detail within one.
V
Bench & ledge nosings
Tanning ledges, bench edges, and baja shelves — tile on these horizontal surfaces is viewed from above and handles constant foot traffic.

Four Ways Accent Tile Changes a Pool

The same pool shell, the same plaster, the same water — but with different accent tile choices, four entirely different results. These are the applications our architects and designers return to most often.

01
Step risers
The Moment of Entry
Pool steps are where swimmers enter the water — the first physical contact with the pool. Hand-painted azulejo on step risers creates a striking visual moment that is visible from the deck, through the water, and in every photograph taken of the pool. It is the detail that guests mention when they describe what makes a pool beautiful.

02
Floor medallion
The View from Above
A geometric medallion on the pool floor reads differently above and below the water. From the deck, it frames the pool's center. Underwater, magnified by depth and refracted by movement, it becomes something closer to a living pattern. Moroccan star geometry and zellige color work exceptionally well at this scale.

03
Spa interior
Full Immersion in Craft
A spa interior entirely in zellige or hand-painted ceramic creates an experience — the sensation of being inside a work of art. This is the application where accent tile stops being a detail and becomes the architecture. Zellige's jewel-like quality in enclosed, lit spa environments is extraordinary.

04
Waterline insert
The Border Within the Border
A narrow band of patterned accent tile set within a plain waterline border adds depth and complexity without overwhelming the design. This is the subtlest application — more felt than consciously noticed — but it is often the difference between a pool that looks designed and one that looks specified.

How to Specify Pool Accent Tile

01 — Placement first
Decide where before what
Define accent tile locations in your pool drawings before selecting product. Step risers, waterline insert, floor feature, and spa interior each have different format, material, and quantity requirements. Placement decisions drive product selection — not the reverse.
02 — Scale matters
Match format to viewing distance
Intricate pattern reads from close range — step risers and spa interiors reward complexity. Floor medallions must be readable from pool deck height — larger geometric motifs outperform small-scale pattern at that viewing distance. Waterline inserts are seen from 10–30 feet — bold color contrast outperforms fine detail.
03 — Request samples early
See it in context before committing
Pool tile samples look different against white paper, white plaster, and blue water. Request samples from multiple collections and place them against your specified pool finish. Lighting conditions at the project site — sun angle, shade, artificial lighting — should all be assessed before finalizing your specification.
04 — Plan lead times
Engage at design development stage
In-stock collections ship in 2–3 weeks. Custom commissions — bespoke zellige colorways, custom-sized medallions, exclusive hand-painted patterns — require 10–18 weeks. Contact us at the design development phase, not at the time of installation, to ensure availability aligns with your project schedule.
05 — Installation guidance
Specify the grout correctly
For all submerged accent tile applications, specify unsanded or fine-sanded epoxy grout. Standard cement grout absorbs pool chemicals and stains. For polished zellige surfaces, use non-sanded epoxy only — sanded grout scratches hand-polished glaze during installation. We provide full installation guidance with every order.
06 — Trade program
Trade accounts for design professionals
Architects, interior designers, and landscape architects working on pool projects qualify for our trade program — including specification samples, technical data sheets, project consultation, and trade pricing. Contact us to apply.

Four Accent Tile Materials — Know the Difference

Morocco — Fez
Zellige
Hand-cut from individually fired ceramic tiles. Thick kiln glaze with natural variation in color and surface. No two pieces identical. The highest expression of Moroccan tile craft — used in palaces and riads for over a thousand years.
Best for: Step risers, medallions, spa interiors, feature panels

Spain — Seville, Talavera
Azulejo
Tin-glazed ceramic with hand-painted decoration. The defining tile of Iberian architecture — geometric, floral, and figurative designs in cobalt, white, terracotta, and polychrome colorways. Every tile a small painting.
Best for: Step risers, waterline insert bands, water feature walls

Morocco & Mediterranean
Encaustic
Cement-bodied tile with inlaid color patterns pressed under high pressure. No glaze — the pattern is part of the body. Matte surface, aged character. Best above the waterline — for coping, pool surrounds, and covered outdoor floors.
Best for: Pool coping, surrounds, outdoor floors (above waterline only)

Morocco — Traditional format
Bejmat
Traditional Moroccan brick-format tile — long, narrow, and hand-formed. Available in natural terracotta and glazed variants. The signature tile of Moroccan riad pools and hammam floors. Excellent for bench edges, nosings, and coping.
Best for: Pool coping, bench nosings, step edges, riad-style borders

Pool Accent Tiles — Frequently Asked Questions

What are pool accent tiles? +
Pool accent tiles are decorative tiles used selectively within a pool design to create visual emphasis, define zones, or add artistic detail. Unlike waterline tile — which runs as a continuous border — accent tiles appear as inserts, medallions, step risers, feature panels, or border strips within the pool interior, on steps, or on adjacent water features. They are the detail work that transforms a functional pool into a designed space.
Where are pool accent tiles installed? +
Pool accent tiles are installed in several key locations: pool step risers (the vertical face of each step), pool step nosings (the edge), decorative insert bands within the waterline border, feature medallions on pool floors or walls, spa interior walls, water feature surfaces, and as transition strips between pool finish materials. Any surface that benefits from a design focal point is a candidate for accent tile.
Can Moroccan zellige be used as pool accent tile? +
Yes. Moroccan zellige is one of the finest pool accent tiles available. Its hand-cut irregular edges, thick kiln-fired glaze, and jewel-like color depth create extraordinary visual interest when used as inserts, medallions, or feature panels within a pool. Our zellige collections are rated for submerged and splash-zone applications when properly installed with epoxy grout.
What is the difference between pool accent tile and pool mosaic tile? +
Pool accent tile refers broadly to any decorative tile used selectively for emphasis — including individual tiles, border strips, or panel inserts. Pool mosaic tile specifically refers to small-format tiles (typically 1×1 inch to 2×2 inch) used to create patterns, images, or all-over surface treatments. Zellige can function as both — individual zellige tesserae used as accent inserts, or full sheets of zellige creating a mosaic interior.
Are Spanish azulejo tiles suitable for pool step risers? +
Yes. Spanish azulejo tiles are a classic choice for pool step risers — the vertical face of each pool step. Their flat, glazed surface and hand-painted geometric patterns create dramatic visual moments at the point where swimmers enter the water. We recommend our fully vitrified azulejo collections for submerged step applications, and epoxy grout for all joints.
How many accent tiles do I need for a pool project? +
Accent tile quantities depend entirely on placement. For step risers: measure the width of each step × riser height × number of steps. For an insert band within a waterline border: pool perimeter × band height in feet. For a floor medallion: the square footage of the intended medallion. Contact us with your pool dimensions and intended placement and we will provide a precise quantity estimate and recommended collections.
Do you offer custom accent tile designs or medallions? +
Yes. We offer custom commissions for hand-painted medallions, bespoke border patterns, and custom colorway zellige. Custom accent tile commissions require 10–18 weeks depending on complexity. Contact us with your design brief — reference images, dimensions, and color direction — and we will prepare a project proposal.
