What Are Pool Waterline Tiles?

Pool waterline tiles are the decorative ceramic border installed at the water's surface — the horizontal band that runs the full perimeter of a swimming pool where water meets the wall. This is the most visible tile in any pool, seen from every angle of the outdoor space.

Beyond aesthetics, waterline tiles serve a critical functional role: they protect the pool shell from calcium scale, sunscreen residue, algae, and UV bleaching that concentrate at the waterline. A quality glazed ceramic waterline tile is far easier to clean than bare plaster or fiberglass, and it preserves the pool's finish for decades.

Pool accent tiles extend the design vocabulary beyond the waterline — into step nosings, feature medallions, spa interiors, water feature walls, and decorative insert bands. Together, waterline and accent tile define the character of a finished pool.

Why Handcrafted Tile Outperforms Machine-Made in a Pool Environment

  • I
    Denser bisque body
Traditional Moroccan and Spanish high-fire kilns produce a denser clay body than mass-market ceramic. Denser bisque absorbs less water — critical for waterline applications subject to constant wet-dry cycling.
  • II
    Thicker, more durable glaze
Hand-applied glazes are typically 2–3× thicker than machine-applied. Thicker glaze means better chlorine resistance, superior UV color stability, and a surface that resists scratching from pool brushes and maintenance equipment.
  • III
    Unique surface variation
Each handcrafted tile has subtle variation in color, texture, and sheen — what craftspeople call "life." A waterline of handmade tile reads as a continuous work of craft. Machine tile reads as wallpaper.
  • IV
    Provenance that adds value
Zellige made in Fez. Azulejo from Seville. These are materials with centuries of production history — specifying them communicates quality to any buyer, guest, or designer who sees the finished pool.
"The waterline is the first thing the eye finds in a pool photograph. It is the single detail that separates a pool that looks finished from one that looks designed."

How to Choose the Right Pool Waterline Tile

Selecting a pool waterline tile involves four decisions: material, format, color, and quantity. Getting each right ensures a result that is beautiful, durable, and correctly specified for your pool type.

01
Choose your material
For waterline (submerged): fully glazed ceramic or zellige only. For coping and deck borders: encaustic cement or terracotta are also suitable. Never use unglazed tile for submerged applications.
Select your format
02
Select your format
Standard waterline formats are 4×4 in, 4×6 in, and 6×6 in. Larger formats (6×8, 8×8) suit contemporary pools. Smaller zellige tesserae (1–2 in) suit mosaic applications and stepped profiles.
03
Match your water color
Pool plaster color and tile color interact — the water color you see is partly determined by the tile. Cobalt and sea glass tiles create vivid aquamarine water. Ivory and cream tiles create soft, gin-clear water effects.
04
Calculate your quantity
Measure pool perimeter × tile height in feet = square footage. Add 12% for cuts and waste. Contact us with your pool dimensions and we will confirm the exact quantity needed.

Pool Waterline Tile — Frequently Asked Questions

What are pool waterline tiles? +
Pool waterline tiles are decorative ceramic or stone tiles installed along the waterline of a swimming pool — the band where water meets the pool wall. They protect the shell from waterline staining, mineral deposits, and UV damage, while creating a finished, designed border. Waterline tiles are typically 4 to 6 inches tall and run the full perimeter of the pool.
Are Moroccan zellige tiles suitable for pool waterlines? +
Yes. Our zellige and glazed Moroccan ceramic collections are high-fire vitrified tiles with impermeable glazes rated for submerged and splash-zone pool applications. They are resistant to chlorine, saltwater, and UV exposure. We recommend fully glazed collections for waterline applications — unglazed or semi-porous bodies should be used above the waterline only.
What is the difference between pool waterline tile and pool accent tile? +
Pool waterline tile refers specifically to the continuous border band installed at the water's surface — typically a single course of 4×4, 4×6, or 6×6 inch tile running the pool perimeter. Pool accent tile is a broader term for any decorative tile used as an insert, step marker, feature medallion, or design element within the pool interior or surround. Both can use the same Moroccan and Mediterranean ceramic collections.
How much waterline tile do I need for my pool? +
Measure the full perimeter of your pool in linear feet. For a standard single-course waterline band (typically 6 inches tall), multiply the perimeter by 0.5 to get square footage. For a double course (12 inches), multiply by 1. Add 10–15% for cuts and breakage. Contact us with your pool dimensions and we will provide a precise quantity estimate and recommended tile collections.
Do you ship pool waterline tiles to Florida and other US states? +
Yes. We ship pool waterline tiles and pool accent tiles to all US states, including Florida, California, Texas, Arizona, Nevada, and Georgia — the largest pool markets in the country. Standard in-stock orders ship within 2–3 weeks. Custom color orders and bespoke commissions require 8–16 weeks. Contact us for freight quotes on large project orders.
Can I request waterline tile samples before ordering? +
Yes. We offer complimentary sample tiles from all active waterline collections. Architects, designers, and homeowners can request samples through our website. We recommend ordering 2–3 samples to compare colors in your specific pool environment and lighting conditions before placing a full project order.
What grout should I use with Moroccan pool waterline tile? +
For submerged waterline applications, we recommend unsanded or fine-sanded epoxy grout. Epoxy grout is non-porous, resistant to pool chemicals, and does not stain. For pool surrounds and coping above the waterline, standard polymer-modified cement grout with a penetrating sealer is appropriate. Avoid sanded grout for polished zellige surfaces as it can scratch the glaze during installation.
