About your tiles

Low maintenance,
long lasting

Our handcrafted Moroccan tiles are exceptionally durable and require minimal maintenance when properly installed and cared for. Their longevity is a testament to centuries of refined craft — zellige tiles found in Moroccan palaces built in the 14th century remain vibrant today.

The key principles are simple: use only pH-neutral cleaners, avoid all acid-based or abrasive products, and seal unglazed surfaces periodically. Following these guidelines will preserve the glaze, colour, and structural integrity of your tiles for generations.

Golden rule: When in doubt, always test any cleaner on an inconspicuous area before full application. What is safe for one tile type may not be suitable for another.

I
Tile type

Zellige & Clay Tiles

Zellige is a fired terracotta clay tile with a hand-applied glaze. The glaze surface is durable but should be protected from harsh chemicals. The unglazed clay body on the sides and back is porous and benefits from sealing.

Recommended
  • Clean with mild soap or pH-neutral tile cleaner diluted in warm water
  • Wipe spills promptly to prevent staining of unglazed edges
  • Seal unglazed sides and backs with Miracle 511 Porous Plus sealant
  • Use a soft cloth or non-abrasive sponge for cleaning
  • Rinse thoroughly with clean water after cleaning
  • Re-seal unglazed areas annually or as needed
Avoid
  • Acid-based cleaners — vinegar, lemon juice, or citric acid-based products
  • Bleach or chlorine-based cleaners on glazed surfaces
  • Abrasive scrubbers, steel wool, or scouring pads
  • High-pressure washing directly on tiles or grout
  • Leaving standing water on unsealed clay edges
  • Harsh chemical strippers or solvent-based cleaners

Hand-Painted Ceramic

Hand-painted ceramic tiles feature a fired glaze over a ceramic body. The painted design is fired into the glaze and is highly durable, but the glaze surface can be scratched by abrasive materials or etched by acid-based products.

Recommended
  • Dust regularly with a dry or lightly damp soft cloth
  • Clean with mild soap and warm water using a soft cloth
  • For pool and wet-area tiles, rinse regularly with fresh water
  • Dry tiles after cleaning in low-traffic or decorative applications
  • Use a soft toothbrush for grout lines and detailed areas
Avoid
  • Abrasive cleaning pads or powders that can scratch the glaze
  • Acid-based cleaners that will etch and dull the glaze surface
  • Steam cleaners at close range — excessive heat can craze glaze
  • Dropping heavy or sharp objects on the tile face
  • Harsh degreasers or solvent-based cleaning products

The vibrant hand-painted designs are fired into the glaze at high temperature and are fully permanent — they will not fade, peel, or wash away with normal use and proper cleaning.

Terracotta Tiles

Terracotta is an unglazed, porous natural clay tile. It is one of the most ancient flooring materials in the world and develops a beautiful natural patina over time. Because it is unglazed, it requires more attentive sealing and maintenance than glazed tile types.

Recommended
  • Seal all terracotta thoroughly before use with a penetrating impregnator
  • Re-seal annually or whenever water no longer beads on the surface
  • Clean regularly with a damp mop and pH-neutral floor cleaner
  • For outdoor use, sweep away debris regularly to prevent staining
  • Apply a topical wax or sealer to enhance colour and provide surface protection
  • Treat oil or food stains promptly with an absorbent poultice
Avoid
  • Any acid-based cleaner — terracotta is highly susceptible to acid etching
  • Using terracotta unsealed — it will absorb stains permanently
  • Wet mopping an unsealed or under-sealed floor
  • Bleach or oxidising cleaners that will discolour the clay
  • Heavy foot traffic before the sealant has fully cured (minimum 24–48 hrs)

Moorish Mosaic

Moorish mosaic tilework (also known as zellij mosaic) consists of individually hand-cut pieces assembled into geometric patterns. The many grout joints and varied tile surfaces require attentive cleaning to prevent grout staining and to maintain the clarity of the pattern.

Recommended
  • Clean with a soft brush and pH-neutral cleaner to reach between tile pieces
  • Seal grout joints with a penetrating grout sealer after installation
  • Re-seal grout annually in high-use or wet areas
  • Use a grout haze remover (non-acid) after installation if haze is present
  • Rinse thoroughly after cleaning to prevent residue build-up in joints
Avoid
  • Acid-based grout cleaners — they will damage both grout and glaze
  • High-pressure jets directly into grout joints
  • Abrasive tools that can chip the hand-cut tile edges
  • Allowing mineral deposits or pool chemicals to dry on the surface
  • Solvent-based cleaners that can strip grout sealant

For pool mosaic installations, rinse the tile surface with fresh water weekly to prevent mineral and chemical deposits from bonding to the glaze. This is the single most effective maintenance step for pool mosaics.

Universal care principles

Six rules for
every surface

01
pH-neutral cleaners only

Never use acid-based, bleach-based, or abrasive products on any of our tile types. When in doubt, plain warm water and a soft cloth is always safe.

02
Test before applying

Always test any new cleaning product on a small, inconspicuous area and allow 24 hours before full application to check for adverse reactions.

03
Seal porous surfaces

Unglazed clay, terracotta, and grout joints must be sealed before use and re-sealed regularly. We recommend Miracle 511 Porous Plus penetrating sealant.

04
Act on spills promptly

Wipe spills immediately, especially on unglazed or unsealed surfaces. The longer a staining substance sits, the deeper it penetrates.

05
Rinse pool tiles weekly

For pool waterline and submerged tiles, rinse with fresh water weekly to prevent mineral deposits and pool chemicals from building up on the glaze.

06
Avoid abrasives entirely

Never use steel wool, abrasive sponges, scouring powders, or wire brushes on any of our tiles. Soft cloths and soft-bristle brushes only.
