Best Uses for Zellige Pool Tiles
Handmade Moroccan zellige tiles are widely used for swimming pool waterlines, full pool interiors, pool accents, spas, shower walls, kitchen backsplashes, and bathroom feature walls. They are a signature material in Mediterranean, Moorish, and Spanish Colonial-style outdoor designs — ideal for both high-end residential and commercial projects including resorts, hotels, and luxury villas.
Handcrafted in Fez, Morocco
Made from natural Moroccan clay and finished entirely by hand, each zellige pool tile reflects authentic craftsmanship and centuries-old tradition dating back to the 14th century. Subtle variations in tone, glaze, and surface texture give every installation a one-of-a-kind appearance impossible to replicate with machine-made tiles. Our tiles are sourced directly from master artisan workshops in Fez — the historic capital of Moroccan zellige production.

Frequently Asked Questions About Zellige Tiles
Pool Suitability & Safety
Yes. Zellige tiles are a premium choice for pool waterlines, full pool interiors, and wet areas. Their kiln-fired clay body and dense glaze are highly resistant to water, chlorine, and saltwater, making them durable and long-lasting in submerged applications.
Yes. The glazed surface of zellige tiles is non-porous and resistant to salt corrosion, making them well-suited for saltwater pools. They are used extensively in coastal and resort properties where saltwater exposure is constant.
Zellige tiles have a naturally textured, hand-finished surface that provides more grip than polished glass or porcelain tiles. They are best used on pool waterlines and vertical surfaces. For pool decking and floors, we recommend consulting your installer about appropriate anti-slip measures.
Yes. Our zellige tiles are kiln-fired at high temperatures, making them frost-resistant and suitable for outdoor pools in cold climates. They perform well through freeze-thaw cycles without cracking or crazing.
Installation & Maintenance
Zellige tiles should be installed by an experienced tile setter using a waterproof polymer-modified adhesive rated for submerged applications. Grout joints should be filled with a waterproof, non-sanded grout and sealed after curing. Due to the natural variation in tile thickness, back-buttering each tile individually is strongly recommended.
The glazed face of zellige tiles does not require sealing. However, sealing the unglazed clay edges and back with a penetrating sealer such as Miracle 511 is recommended before installation to prevent moisture absorption through the sides.
Zellige pool tiles are low maintenance. Use a mild pH-neutral pool tile cleaner and a soft brush for routine cleaning. Avoid abrasive pads, acidic cleaners, or pressure washing at close range, as these can damage the glaze over time. For calcium deposits at the waterline, a diluted white vinegar solution works well.
When properly installed, Moroccan zellige tiles can last several decades in pool environments. Their dense kiln-fired body and glazed surface make them highly resistant to chlorine, UV exposure, saltwater, and temperature fluctuation.
Appearance & Design
Pools tiled with zellige have a distinctive luminous, jewel-like quality. The hand-glazed surface catches and reflects light differently throughout the day, giving the water a rich, layered color that shifts from deep emerald or cobalt to lighter reflective tones. No two installations look exactly alike, which is what makes zellige a signature choice for luxury pool design.
Our zellige collection includes emerald green, cobalt blue, turquoise, teal, petrol blue, ice blue, sage green, forest green, pistachio, olive, aqua green, and Moroccan white. Each color is hand-glazed, meaning tonal variation is built into every tile — creating a naturally vibrant, non-uniform finish.
Yes. Zellige tiles work beautifully alongside natural stone coping, travertine decking, and Moorish mosaic accents. Many designers use zellige for the waterline band and complement it with a contrasting material for the pool interior or surrounding deck.
Ordering & Logistics
Our zellige pool tiles are available in 4×4 inch, 2×2 inch, and 2×6 inch formats. The 4×4 is the most popular for pool waterlines and feature walls. The 2×6 subway format works well for contemporary and Spanish Colonial pool designs.
