Artisan Craftsmanship
"Every tile is a singular expression of centuries-old craft — no two are alike."

Our tiles are produced in Fez, Morocco, by skilled artisans whose families have refined this tradition across generations. Natural clay is shaped by hand, glazed individually, and fired in wood kilns — a process that produces the rich variation, luminous depth, and authentic texture that machine production cannot replicate.

Pool Waterline Tiles

The narrow band at the water's edge — the most visible element of any pool. Our zellige waterline tiles create a luminous, jewel-like border that shifts with light throughout the day. Chlorine-resistant and pool-safe for submerged applications.

Why Handcrafted Tile

Why Moroccan Zellige Outperforms Other Pool Tile Materials

  • 01

    Centuries of Pool-Proven Performance

Zellige clay tiles have lined Moroccan hammams and fountain pools for over 800 years — in climates far more demanding than Florida or California.

  • 02

Faceted Surface Creates Unmatched Visual Depth

Each handcut zellige tile has a slightly angled face. Unlike flat porcelain or glass, this faceting catches and refracts light — making water appear richer, deeper, and more luminous.

  • 03

    High-Fire Clay is Chemically Inert

Kiln-fired at high temperature, zellige clay is completely non-reactive to chlorine, saltwater, pool chemicals, UV, and frost — meeting the demands of any pool environment.

  • 04

Every Tile is Unique — No Two Pools Identical

Natural color variation and hand-cut texture means your pool waterline is one of a kind — something mass-produced porcelain or glass tile can never offer.

Buyer's Guide

How to Choose Pool Tile for Your Project

Whether you're building a new pool or renovating an existing one, these four steps will help you select the right tile for your waterline, interior, coping, or accent application.

01

Identify the Application

Waterline tile, full pool liner, pool floor, spa interior, and coping all have different requirements. Waterline tiles must withstand the chemical interface between air and water — our zellige is rated for all these zones.

02

Calculate Square Footage

For waterline tile, measure the full pool perimeter in linear feet. A standard 12" tall waterline band means your sq/ft equals your linear footage. Add 12% for cuts and waste. Min. order is 50 sq/ft.

03

Order Samples First

Zellige color shifts in different lighting and underwater. We strongly recommend ordering samples before committing to your full project order. Request samples directly from any product page.

04

Plan for Lead Time

All tiles are custom made to order in Fez, Morocco. Allow approximately 8 weeks from confirmed order. Plan your installation schedule accordingly — we recommend ordering well ahead of your pool project start date.

Frequently Asked Questions

Pool Tile Questions, Answered

The best waterline pool tile combines durability, chemical resistance, and visual appeal. Moroccan zellige tiles are among the finest choices for luxury waterlines — they are chlorine-safe, frost-proof, UV-resistant, and create a faceted, jewel-like surface that magnifies and animates the water. Porcelain and glass are also popular, but neither offers the handcrafted uniqueness and visual depth of zellige.
Yes. Our zellige tiles are kiln-fired high-fire clay with an impermeable glaze — completely chlorine-resistant, saltwater-compatible, pool-safe, UV-resistant, and frost-proof. They are rated for both submerged and waterline applications in residential and commercial pools across the USA.
Measure the full perimeter of your pool in linear feet. For a standard single-course waterline band at 12 inches tall, your square footage equals your perimeter in linear feet. For a 6-inch band, divide by 2. Always add 12% for cuts and waste. Our minimum order is 50 square feet. Contact us for a free estimate on your specific pool dimensions.
Yes. We ship handcrafted pool tiles to all 50 US states, with particularly strong presence in Florida (Palm Beach, Naples, Miami, Coral Gables, Key Biscayne), California (Los Angeles, Newport Beach, San Francisco, Santa Barbara), Texas (Dallas, Houston, Austin), Arizona, Nevada, and Hawaii. We serve homeowners, architects, interior designers, and pool builders nationwide.
Zellige is a hand-cut, individually kiln-fired clay tile from Fez, Morocco. Unlike mass-produced porcelain or glass tile, each zellige tile has a unique faceted surface created by hand-cutting, producing natural color variation and a luminous, light-refracting quality that flat-faced tiles cannot replicate. At the pool waterline, zellige creates a living, animated border that shifts with the light — something no machine-made tile can achieve.
Yes. All our pool tiles are rated for spa, hot tub, and fountain applications. They withstand the higher temperatures and chemical concentrations of spa environments. Many of our clients use the same zellige or Moorish mosaic tile for both the pool waterline and the adjacent spa surround to create a cohesive luxury look.
For pool applications, we recommend a non-sanded epoxy grout, which provides superior water resistance, chemical resistance, and durability compared to cement-based grout. For the waterline specifically, ensure your installer uses pool-rated thinset bonding adhesive. Your tile installer should also ensure proper expansion joints are included to allow for thermal movement.
Because all tiles are custom made to order, pricing is based on your selection, square footage, and timeline. Use the Request a Quote button on any product page, or contact us directly at sales@moorisharchitecturaldesign.com or (415) 259-4820, Monday–Friday 10am–3pm PT. We typically respond within one business day.
