Fez Tile 06

4.9 (38 reviews)
Handcrafted in the ancient medina of Fez, Morocco, our zellige pool tiles bring a thousand years of artisan mastery to the waterlines, courtyard fountains, and outdoor stair risers of Arizona's most distinguished private estates — from the Camelback Mountain compounds of Paradise Valley to the resort enclaves of North Scottsdale, the hillside retreats of Carefree, and the red rock estates of Sedona. Each tile is hand-pressed from natural terracotta clay, glazed with mineral oxides, and fired in traditional wood-burning kilns to produce a surface depth and color permanence that no factory tile achieves. UV-stable, frost-proof, and certified for chlorinated and saltwater pools.

In Arizona, the pool is not a seasonal amenity. It is the center of outdoor life for ten months of the year — the axis around which private gardens are designed, terraces are oriented, and the rhythm of daily living is organized. In the estates of Paradise Valley, the walled compounds of North Scottsdale, and the hillside retreats of Carefree and Sedona, the pool is an architectural commitment of the highest order.

The tile at its waterline deserves the same commitment. Our handcrafted Moroccan Blue & White pool accent tiles — pressed from red clay in the ancient medina of Fez, glazed with natural mineral oxides, and fired in traditional wood-burning kilns — bring to Arizona's finest pools a material depth, a chromatic richness, and an artisan provenance that no domestic or industrial tile can provide. They are made for the desert light. They were made for a pool like yours.

The Arizona Difference

A Tile That Performs as Beautifully in 115° Sonoran Desert Heat as It Does in a Riad Courtyard in Fez

Arizona's climate is among the most demanding on earth for pool materials. Extreme UV intensity, thermal cycling from desert cold nights to triple-digit afternoons, calcium-heavy water chemistry, and year-round chemical exposure place rigorous demands on any waterline tile. Our kiln-fired Moroccan zellige is rated frost-proof, UV-stable, and certified for chlorinated and saltwater pools — mineral glazes that do not fade, clay bodies that do not crack, and color that is fired permanently into the material rather than printed on its surface. The desert does not diminish these tiles. It reveals them.

Why Moroccan Blue & White pool tile Is the Definitive Pool Tile for Arizona's Desert Estates

The relationship between Moroccan craft tradition and the Sonoran Desert is closer than it first appears. The architecture of Scottsdale and Paradise Valley has long drawn from Mediterranean and Moorish vocabularies — the thick adobe walls, the shaded courtyards, the tiled water features, the walled private gardens that turn their backs on the street and open to the sky. These design choices are not stylistic coincidence. They are climatically intelligent responses to an arid, sun-saturated landscape — the same responses that produced the great riad compounds of Fez and Marrakech centuries before modern air conditioning made them optional.

Blue & White accent tile emerged from this same climate logic. Its dense, vitrified clay body resists water absorption. Its mineral glaze tolerates extreme UV without fading or chalking. Its irregular surface, far from being a liability in strong desert light, becomes an extraordinary visual asset — breaking up direct sun into thousands of micro-reflections, animating the waterline with a shimmer that perfectly complements Arizona's light quality from dawn to dusk.

UV Permanence

Mineral oxide glazes fired at over 1,000°C produce color that is part of the material itself. Arizona's intense UV cannot fade, bleach, or alter what is embedded in kiln-fired clay.

Thermal Stability

The vitrified clay body of zellige withstands the extreme thermal cycling of Arizona's desert climate — from near-freezing winter nights in the high desert to triple-digit summer afternoons — without cracking, spalling, or delaminating.

Desert Light Behavior

The irregular surface of hand-pressed zellige breaks Arizona's strong directional sunlight into thousands of shifting micro-reflections — creating a waterline that appears to move and breathe across the arc of the day.

"In the low-angle light of an Arizona winter morning, a Spanish Mediterranean Blue & White  waterline does something no flat tile can — it makes the pool look as though it is lit from within."

A Thousand Years of Craft — Handmade in the Ancient Medina of Fez

Our tiles come from Fez, Morocco — a UNESCO World Heritage city and the undisputed world capital of zellige production. The medina of Fez, the largest car-free urban area on earth, contains artisan workshops that have produced decorative ceramic tile without interruption since the 14th century. The clay is drawn from a single geological deposit in the Saïss plain outside the city, prized for centuries for its exceptional plasticity and high mineral density. It is shaped entirely by hand, air-dried in the open courtyards of the workshop, and fired in wood-burning kilns at temperatures exceeding 1,000°C.

The glazes are applied by the hands of maalems — master craftsmen who begin their training as children and spend a decade in daily practice before they are trusted to work on commissioned pieces. Every color is achieved through natural mineral oxide compounds: cobalt for blue, copper for turquoise, iron for terracotta, manganese for black. These are not pigments applied to the surface of the tile. They are fused into the glaze body in the kiln, where they become as permanent as the clay itself.

When a tile from Fez arrives at the waterline of a Paradise Valley pool, it carries with it a lineage of craft that predates the Hohokam civilization that once inhabited this same desert. There is no factory equivalent. There is no machine reproduction. There is only clay, mineral, fire, and the irreducible skill of a human hand — which is precisely why these tiles are chosen by Arizona's most discerning architects, designers, and estate owners.

Specified Across Arizona's Most Exclusive Communities

Arizona's luxury residential market is one of the most active in the country, drawing Fortune 500 executives, professional athletes, celebrities, and high-net-worth relocators from California, New York, and internationally. The communities where these buyers build and renovate represent a design market of exceptional sophistication — one that demands materials with the quality, provenance, and visual distinction to match the ambition of the projects themselves.

Paradise Valley — Camelback & Mummy Mountain Estates

Arizona's wealthiest municipality, with an average household income of $382,413 and a median home price exceeding $3.35 million. Paradise Valley's custom estates — many priced above $10 million, set on acre-plus lots between Camelback and Mummy Mountain — demand materials of the absolute highest caliber. Our zellige pool tiles are specified here for waterline installations, courtyard fountains, and outdoor stair risers that need to hold their own against the most distinguished residential architecture in the state.

North Scottsdale — Silverleaf, DC Ranch & Desert Mountain

Scottsdale's resort communities and private golf enclaves — from the ultra-luxury compounds of Silverleaf to the 7,200-acre gated community of Desert Mountain — represent Arizona's most active luxury pool construction market. Year-round outdoor entertaining, resort-quality pool environments, and the elevated design expectations of buyers relocating from coastal markets make this one of our most significant regions for zellige specification.

Carefree & Cave Creek

The high-desert communities of Carefree and Cave Creek — Arizona's second-wealthiest city cluster — attract buyers who value privacy, natural beauty, and a quieter expression of desert luxury. The low-density development, panoramic views, and strong arts culture of these communities create a design environment in which artisan materials like zellige are consistently valued over mass-produced alternatives.

Arcadia & Phoenix Estates

Arcadia Proper — one of Phoenix's most prestigious neighborhoods, known for oversized lots, citrus groves, and Camelback Mountain views — is home to some of the most architecturally significant residential renovations currently underway in Greater Phoenix. Our zellige pool tiles bring material authenticity and historical depth to outdoor spaces that consistently command among the highest price-per-square-foot values in the city.

Sedona & Verde Valley

The red rock country of Sedona presents one of the most visually dramatic residential settings in North America. Luxury estate pools here are designed to be seen against a backdrop of ancient sandstone formations — a context in which the earthy warmth of Moroccan zellige, with its natural clay tones and mineral glaze depth, creates a particularly resonant material dialogue with the landscape.

Tucson — Catalina Foothills & Oro Valley

Southern Arizona's premier luxury communities — Catalina Foothills, consistently ranked Arizona's wealthiest suburb by household income, and the golf-course estates of Oro Valley — are home to architecturally ambitious residential projects where our zellige tiles are specified for pools, outdoor fountains, and garden stair installations that deserve materials of genuine craft heritage.

Pool Waterline, Fountains, Stairs & the Full Outdoor Environment

Arizona's outdoor living culture — year-round, architecturally considered, and increasingly resort-quality — creates demand for artisan tile across the full range of exterior aquatic and architectural applications. Our Moroccan zellige is specified for all of them.

Pool Waterline

The primary and most transformative application. In Arizona's strong desert light, the surface variation of hand-pressed zellige produces a waterline that shimmers, shifts, and changes color across the arc of the day — a visual effect uniquely suited to a climate where pools are used and observed at every hour from dawn to deep night. A single course of zellige at the waterline redefines the entire character of the pool.

Pool Steps & Stair Risers

Hand-painted zellige stair risers on pool entry steps are one of the most distinctive details available in Arizona luxury pool design. Each riser becomes a canvas for geometric pattern, color field, or painted motif — and a sequence of zellige risers descending into a desert pool creates one of the most memorable material moments in any outdoor space.

Fountains & Water Features

The Moorish fountain is the ancestor of every garden water feature in the world — and zellige is its defining material. In the walled courtyards and desert garden environments of Paradise Valley, Scottsdale, and Sedona estates, a zellige-tiled fountain wall or basin brings an authenticity and historical resonance that no manufactured alternative achieves. The sound of water over hand-pressed tile is a particular and irreplaceable thing.

Outdoor Stair Risers

Beyond the pool, zellige is specified across the full range of exterior architectural stairways — garden terraces, entry approaches, retaining wall faces, and landscape steps throughout the estate environment. The earthy mineral warmth of Fez clay is as beautiful against Arizona sandstone as it is at the edge of water.

Spa & Plunge Pool Surrounds

Arizona's year-round climate makes spa and hot tub environments a primary focus of outdoor design — heated in winter, cooled in summer, and used constantly. The thermal and chemical resistance of kiln-fired zellige makes it the ideal tile for spa interiors, plunge pool linings, and hot tub surround walls, combining exceptional durability with the artisan beauty that luxury desert estates demand.

Outdoor Shower & Cabana Walls

Pool cabanas, outdoor showers, and covered entertaining structures on Arizona estates are increasingly treated as architectural objects in their own right — not utility additions but designed spaces worthy of serious material consideration. A zellige-tiled outdoor shower wall or cabana splash surface brings the full weight of artisan craft to these details.

Eco-Friendly Materials for a Desert State That Values Its Land

Arizona's relationship with natural resources is one of the defining realities of life in the desert. Water is precious here. The land is ancient. The light is not something to be wasted. The architects, designers, and homeowners building Arizona's finest residences increasingly bring this environmental awareness to every material decision — and our Moroccan zellige tiles honor that commitment at every stage of their production.

All-Natural Clay Body

Formed from natural terracotta clay with no synthetic additives, no petroleum binders, and no polymer fillers of any kind. Entirely natural before firing. Entirely inert, stable, and recyclable afterward. The most honest material in the tile world.

Natural Mineral Glaze

Every color — cobalt, turquoise, terracotta, ivory, forest green — is achieved using natural mineral oxide compounds. No synthetic dyes, no heavy metal contamination, no volatile organic compounds. The color is embedded in the glaze body, not printed on its surface.

Wood-Fired Kilns

Our artisan workshops in Fez fire in traditional kilns fueled with pruned olive and cedar wood — a process with a carbon footprint a fraction of that produced by the industrial gas-fired tunnel kilns of mass ceramic manufacturing. Craft and sustainability point in the same direction.

Made-to-Order, Zero Overproduction

Every order is produced to specification, in the quantity required, for a specific project. No speculative manufacturing, no excess inventory, no waste. And a properly installed zellige waterline tile will still be beautiful in fifty years — which is the most meaningful sustainability claim any material can make.

LEED-certified projects, green building programs, and clients with documented environmental commitments can request full material data sheets, production provenance documentation, and environmental product declarations from our studio.

Custom-Made — Because the Estates of Paradise Valley Are Not Built from Catalogues

The finest homes in Paradise Valley, Silverleaf, and Sedona are designed with individual intention that extends to every surface and every detail. Our custom fabrication program exists to serve exactly this level of design ambition — working from the earliest specification stage with architects, interior designers, landscape architects, pool builders, and estate owners to produce tiles that are made for one project and no other.

01

Custom Colorways

Our standard palette spans the full classical Moroccan range — cobalt blue, turquoise, forest green, terracotta, ivory, charcoal, ochre, and manganese black. For Arizona projects, we also develop custom desert-responsive palettes: warm sands, burnt sienna, deep Sedona red, and the specific warm-toned whites that complement adobe and travertine. Custom glaze formulas matched to Pantone references, paint selections, stone samples, or interior palettes.

02

Custom Geometric Patterns

Our maalems in Fez can execute any historic Islamic geometric pattern at any scale — from classic eight-pointed star arrangements and Andalusian vine borders to complex muqarnas-derived compositions and entirely original designs developed in collaboration with your team. Geometric patterns are particularly powerful in Arizona's strong directional light, where shadow play across a tiled surface becomes a dynamic, hour-by-hour visual event.

03

Custom Sizes & Formats

Standard waterline formats in 4×4", 6×6", 4×8", and 3×6" brick. Custom sizes produced for non-standard waterline heights, freeform pool geometries, radius walls, vanishing-edge transitions, and all bespoke installation conditions. Arizona's resort-quality pools are rarely standard — our tiles aren't either.

04

Borders, Trim & Coordinating Pieces

Listello borders, rope moldings, corner returns, coping-edge tiles, step nosings, fountain surround pieces, and all transition tiles — hand-made in coordination with your field tile for a fully resolved, architecturally coherent installation from waterline to garden wall.

05

Physical Sample Program

Physical samples provided for design board review, client presentations, and job-site mock-ups before any production commitment. For significant estate and resort projects, we produce a full installation panel — allowing you to see your custom tile in the actual light of your Arizona outdoor environment before committing to full production.
