General Pool Tile Questions

What are the best tiles for a swimming pool?

The best pool tiles combine strong performance characteristics — low water absorption, chemical resistance, UV stability, and frost resistance — with the aesthetic qualities that define your pool's design. For luxury pools, handcrafted Moroccan zellige tiles, Moorish mosaic tiles, and hand-painted Mediterranean ceramic tiles are among the most beautiful and distinctive choices available. For purely practical applications, porcelain pool tiles offer excellent durability and low maintenance. The best tile for your pool depends on your design goals, climate, budget, and the specific surface you are tiling.

What tiles can be used in a swimming pool?

Tiles suitable for swimming pool use must have low water absorption (below 3% for wet areas, below 0.5% for submerged applications), chemical resistance to pool sanitizers, UV-stable glazes, and — in cold climates — frost resistance. Suitable tile types include glazed ceramic, glazed porcelain, glass tile, and high-fired glazed clay tiles such as zellige and Moroccan mosaic. Natural stone requires careful selection and sealing for pool use. Not all tiles marketed as "pool tiles" meet all these requirements — always verify specifications before purchasing.

What is the difference between pool tiles and regular tiles?

Pool tiles are specifically manufactured or selected to perform in wet, chemically treated, and UV-exposed environments. The key differences are lower water absorption rates, glaze formulations resistant to chlorine and saltwater, higher firing temperatures for greater density and durability, and in cold climates, a denser body that resists freeze-thaw damage. Regular interior wall tiles often have higher water absorption and glaze formulations not rated for continuous chemical exposure — making them unsuitable for pool waterline and submerged applications.

How long do pool tiles last?

High-quality pool tiles installed correctly on a properly prepared substrate with appropriate adhesive and grout can last 20–30 years or more. Handcrafted Moroccan zellige and mosaic tiles, kiln-fired at high temperatures with dense, low-porosity clay bodies, are among the most durable pool tile materials available. The most common causes of premature pool tile failure are improper installation (inadequate adhesive coverage, incorrect adhesive selection, missing movement joints) and poor water chemistry maintenance rather than tile quality.

How much do pool tiles cost?

Pool tile costs vary widely depending on material, quality, and complexity. Standard ceramic pool tiles start from around $5–$15 per square foot. Premium porcelain and glass pool tiles range from $15–$50 per square foot. Handcrafted artisan pool tiles — zellige, Moorish mosaic, hand-painted Mediterranean ceramics — are priced on request and vary based on pattern complexity, colorway, and order volume. All our tiles are custom made to order with a 50 square foot minimum. Contact us for a project-specific quote.

Can I use Moroccan tiles in a swimming pool?

Yes. High-quality Moroccan tiles — particularly zellige and Moorish mosaic — are well suited for pool waterline, spa, and wet-area applications. Their high-fired glazed clay bodies have low water absorption, strong chemical resistance, and excellent durability in pool environments. Our tiles are used in luxury pools across the United States in both chlorinated and saltwater pool systems. They are frost-resistant and rated for outdoor applications in all US climate zones.

Pool Waterline Tile Questions

What is pool waterline tile?

Pool waterline tile is the band of decorative tile installed along the interior wall of a swimming pool at the water's surface level. Typically six inches tall, this band sits exactly at the waterline — half submerged, half exposed — protecting the pool shell from chemical and mineral buildup while framing the pool with color, pattern, and decorative detail. The waterline tile is the most visible design element of any pool and has the greatest influence on how the pool water appears in color and character.

What size should pool waterline tiles be?

The most common pool waterline tile formats are brick and border tiles (2"x6" to 3"x9"), small square tiles (2"x2" to 4"x4"), and small mosaic tiles (1"x1" to 2"x2"). Brick format tiles emphasize the horizontal line of the waterline band and create a clean, architectural accent. Small mosaic tiles work particularly well on curved pool surfaces. Larger format tiles (6"x6") make a stronger visual statement but require a very flat, well-prepared substrate for proper installation.

How do waterline tiles affect pool water color?

The waterline tile has a direct influence on how pool water is perceived. The tile color is the first thing the eye encounters at the water's edge, and light reflecting off the tile into the adjacent water shifts the water's perceived hue. Deep cobalt tiles intensify the blue quality of the water. Turquoise tiles create a tropical, lagoon-like appearance. Sage green tiles give water a natural cenote quality. White tiles maximize water clarity and brightness. Choose your waterline tile color with your desired water appearance in mind.

How do I clean pool waterline tiles?

Brush waterline tiles weekly with a soft nylon pool brush during regular pool maintenance to prevent calcium and mineral buildup. For calcium scale deposits, apply a diluted white vinegar solution with a soft cloth and rinse thoroughly. For heavier deposits, use a pH-neutral calcium remover rated for pool tile. Avoid abrasive pads, steel wool, and acid-based cleaners on glazed handcrafted tiles as these can damage the glaze surface. Reapply grout sealer annually to maintain stain resistance in grout joints.

How do I replace pool waterline tiles?

To replace individual broken or damaged pool waterline tiles, the pool must be drained to below the waterline tile band. Carefully remove the damaged tile using a grout saw, chisel, and hammer — working carefully to avoid damaging adjacent tiles. Clean the substrate thoroughly, apply pool-rated adhesive, set the replacement tile, allow to cure, and regrout. Because handcrafted tiles like zellige have natural color variation between batches, we recommend ordering 10–15% overage at the time of your original purchase for future repairs.

Can pool waterline tiles be used in a saltwater pool?

Yes. Our glazed ceramic and clay pool waterline tiles are suitable for saltwater pool systems. The non-porous glazed surface is resistant to salt corrosion, and our tiles are used extensively in coastal luxury properties across Florida, California, and Hawaii where saltwater pool systems are common. Confirm saltwater suitability with your installer for the specific adhesive and grout system used, as some cement-based adhesives can be affected by high salt concentrations over time.

Pool Accent Tile Questions

What are pool accent tiles?

Pool accent tiles are decorative tiles placed in specific locations around a swimming pool to create visual interest and define architectural features. Common accent tile locations include the waterline band, stair risers, tanning ledge borders, spa surrounds, fountain walls, and adjacent courtyard or feature wall surfaces. Unlike field tiles that cover large uniform areas, accent tiles are chosen for their pattern, color, or texture — and placed strategically to draw the eye and elevate the overall design.

Where should I use pool accent tiles?

The highest-impact locations for pool accent tiles are the waterline band, pool stair risers, spa surrounds, and fountain walls. The waterline band has the greatest overall visual impact on the pool's appearance. Stair risers are highly visible from both the pool and the deck and reward decorative tile detail. Spa surrounds are intimate spaces where richly detailed tiles are seen at close range. Fountain walls are excellent locations for Moorish mosaic or zellige accent tiles that create an Alhambra-inspired focal point in the outdoor space.

What are the best pool accent tiles for stair risers?

Hand-painted Spanish colonial and Mediterranean ceramic tiles are the most popular choice for pool stair riser applications. A bold geometric pattern in cobalt and white, terracotta and white, or multicolor Andalusian motifs creates a striking visual effect that elevates the pool entry. Moorish mosaic stair risers are even more dramatic, creating an architectural detail of genuine cultural depth and visual complexity. Zellige in a single bold color is a more restrained but equally beautiful option.

Moroccan & Mediterranean Tile Questions

What is zellige tile?

Zellige is a traditional Moroccan handcrafted tile made from a unique natural clay found only in the Fez region of Morocco. Each tile is individually hand-pressed from raw clay, hand-glazed with artisanal color pigments, and kiln-fired in traditional wood-burning ovens. The result is a tile with extraordinary surface depth — a luminous, slightly irregular glaze that catches and reflects light in a way no machine-made tile can replicate. Natural color variation, minor surface irregularities, and slight size variation are characteristics of authentic zellige and are not considered defects.

What is Moorish mosaic tile?

Moorish mosaic tile — also known as zillij — is a traditional Moroccan decorative art form consisting of hand-cut glazed clay pieces assembled into intricate geometric compositions. Each mosaic is made by individually chipping, shaping, and glazing small clay pieces, then arranging them into interlocking star and polygon patterns inspired by the great architectural traditions of the Alhambra, the Medina of Fez, and the palaces of Marrakech. No two Moorish mosaic installations are exactly alike — each is a handcrafted original created by master artisans.

Are Moorish mosaic tiles good for pools?

Yes. Moorish mosaic tiles are an excellent choice for pool waterlines, spa surrounds, fountain walls, and wet-area accent applications. Their glazed clay surface is water-resistant, chlorine-safe, and durable in pool environments. Their small individual pieces make them particularly well suited for curved pool surfaces where larger tiles cannot follow the contour cleanly. They are frost-resistant and rated for outdoor use in all US climate zones.

What is the difference between zellige and Moorish mosaic?

Zellige tiles are individual handmade glazed clay tiles used as field tiles — each one a complete unit applied individually to create a surface with natural color and texture variation. Moorish mosaic (zillij) tiles are small individually hand-cut pieces assembled together into larger geometric pattern compositions. Both are rooted in Moroccan craftsmanship but create very different visual effects: zellige provides a rich, organic tonal field surface, while Moorish mosaic creates intricate geometric patterns and compositions. Many luxury pool designs combine both — zellige as the field tile and Moorish mosaic as an accent or border.

How are your tiles made?

All our tiles are handcrafted by master artisans in Fez, Morocco using traditional techniques refined over eight centuries. The process begins with natural clay sourced from the Fez region, which is refined, shaped by hand, and dried in the sun. Color pigments are mixed from natural mineral oxides and applied by hand before firing. Tiles are kiln-fired at high temperatures in traditional wood-burning kilns to produce the dense, lustrous, durable finish characteristic of authentic Moroccan tile. Each tile is individually made — no two are exactly alike.

Ordering & Logistics Questions

What is the minimum order?

All tiles are custom made to order with a minimum of 50 square feet. Because each order is custom produced specifically for your project, we do not hold stock. Production and shipping from Morocco typically takes 6–8 weeks from order confirmation.

Can I order samples?

Yes. We strongly recommend ordering samples before committing to a full order so you can evaluate the color, glaze quality, and surface character of the tile in your specific lighting and design context. Contact us for current sample availability and pricing. Sample costs are credited toward a confirmed purchase order of 50 square feet or more.

Do you ship nationwide?

Yes. We ship to all US states including California, Florida, Texas, Arizona, Nevada, New York, Hawaii, Utah, Colorado, and all others. Large orders are coordinated via freight shipping. Contact us for a shipping quote specific to your location and order size.

How far in advance should I order?

We recommend placing your tile order a minimum of 10–12 weeks before your planned installation date. This allows 6–8 weeks for custom production and shipping, plus 2–4 weeks buffer for your installer's schedule and substrate preparation. Ordering well in advance also ensures you have tiles on-site before the pool shell is ready for tiling — avoiding costly installation delays.

Do you work with architects and interior designers?

Yes. We have a dedicated Trade Program for architects, interior designers, pool builders, and contractors. Our trade program provides access to specification support, sample ordering, project consultation, and dedicated account management.
